While I can't go into its design features, I can say Armenia was its first target! And we only had the weapon set on stun!" Tile damage A partly melted aluminum plate on Atlantis ' underside.Ītlantis ' Thermal Protection System tiles sustained extensive damage during the flight. At an astronaut meeting Gibson said, "I know many of you may have been very curious about our classified payload. The day after Atlantis landed, the 1988 Armenian earthquake killed tens of thousands in the Soviet Union. As a classified DoD mission, details or confirmation of such an EVA remain unreleased. These unspecified repairs could have necessitated a spacewalk, likely performed by Ross and Shepherd. Interviews with members of the crew several years after the flight confirmed there had been a problem with the satellite upon release, whereupon a rendezvous with the satellite was effected and repairs performed. There has been speculation that an EVA was conducted during this mission. Atlantis was returned to the Kennedy Space Center on December 13, 1988, and moved into an OPF on December 14, 1988. The total mission elapsed time at wheels-stop was 4 days, 9 hours, 5 minutes, and 37 seconds. Atlantis touched down on December 6, 1988, on Runway 17 at Edwards Air Force Base, California, at 18:36:11 EST. Liftoff occurred from LC-39B at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on December 2, 1988, at 09:30:34 a.m. The mission was originally scheduled to launch on December 1, 1988, but the launch was postponed one day because of cloud cover and strong wind conditions at the launch site. NASA archival information has identified USA-34 as Lacrosse 1, a side-looking radar, all-weather surveillance satellite for the U.S. The Space Shuttle Atlantis (OV-104), at the time the youngest in NASA's shuttle fleet, made its third flight on a classified mission for the United States Department of Defense (DoD). Damaged thermal protection tiles are clearly visible at touchdown. Mission summary Atlantis launches on STS-27. Crew PositionĬrew seating arrangements Seat As STS-51-L was designated STS-33, future flights with the STS-26 through STS-33 designators would require the R in their documentation to avoid conflicts in tracking data from one mission to another. Official documentation for that mission contained the designator STS-27 throughout. The mission is technically designated STS-27R, as the original STS-27 designator belonged to STS-51-I, the twentieth Space Shuttle mission. The mission landed successfully, although intense heat damage needed to be repaired. However, this was over less critical areas and the missing tile was over an antenna which gave extra protection to the spacecraft structure (and not part of a wing as cited initially). Compared to the damage that Columbia sustained on STS-107, Atlantis experienced more extensive damage. This was a situation that was similar to the one that would prove fatal 15 years later on STS-107. The vessel's heat shielding was substantially damaged during lift-off, and crew members thought that they would die during reentry. Department of Defense (DoD), ultimately determined to be a Lacrosse surveillance satellite. STS-27 carried a classified payload for the U.S. Launching on December 2, 1988, on a four-day mission, it was the second shuttle flight after the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster of January 1986. STS-27 was the 27th NASA Space Shuttle mission, and the third flight of Space Shuttle Atlantis.

As VCSEL-based sensors become more common, they are likely to steadily get cheaper and better. As a result, they benefit from the huge economies of scale in the semiconductor industry. One of the big selling points of VCSELs and SPADs is that they can be created using conventional semiconductor fabrication techniques. I found Apple's announcement particularly interesting because I've been working on a story about companies that are using the same combination of technologies-VCSEL lasers and SPAD detectors-to build much more powerful lidar for the automotive market. I'll explain what these are in the next section. It then detects the return flash using an array of sensors called single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) supplied by Sony. Repeat this process across a two-dimensional grid and the result is a three-dimensional "point cloud" showing the location of objects around a room, street, or other location.Ī June analysis by System Plus Consulting found that the iPad's lidar sends out light using an array of vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) made by Lumentum. Because light travels at a constant speed, the round-trip time can be translated into a precise distance estimate. Lidar works by sending out laser light and measuring how long it takes to bounce back. And while no one has done a teardown of the iPhone 12 yet, we can learn a lot from recent iPad teardowns. Apple first introduced the technology with the refreshed iPad in March. Tuesday's presentation offered little detail about how the iPhone's lidar actually works, but this isn't Apple's first device with lidar. And it may enable the creation of a new generation of sophisticated augmented reality apps. Apple says lidar will enhance the iPhone's camera by allowing more rapid focus, especially in low-light situations. At Tuesday's unveiling of the iPhone 12, Apple touted the capabilities of its new lidar sensor. The only newer Nikon that comes close is the quirky Nikon Df, with its high-end Nikon D4 sensor but it also lacks the rugged pro-style body the D700 has. The D800 is a different camera aimed at a different audience and the D750 looks like a reasonable upgrade for the D700-users but can’t quite match the D700’s rugged body. That was probably why Nikon was a little reluctant to introduce a ‘real’ new Nikon D700. That was why a lot of professional and semi-professional photographers chose to buy a D700 instead of the much more expensive D3. The D700 offers a 12 megapixel resolution and an, for that time, incredible ISO range going from ISO200 to ISO6400 native. It shares a lot of internals with the D3, like the sensor and the autofocus system. It was introduced in 2008 as the smaller and more affordable alternative for the professional Nikon D3. The Nikon D700 is still seen as one of the best and most iconic cameras Nikon has introduced in the last decennia. Thinking about other options? Read my 2023 review of the original Sony A7, the Sony A7RIII, Nikon D750or Nikon D800. So if you are considering a D750: I’d say go for it! If you are still in doubt: read my review and see if this camera is for you. If I had 300-400 euros burning a hole in my pocket I’d rather have a former high end brick that will withstand about anything you throw at it than a flimsy feeling mirrorless with a cheap lens. For its time it was one of the best cameras you could buy, and now it is still a very good camera you can buy for the price of a mid-end APS-C mirrorless camera. But unless you are printing all your photo’s in roomsized-wallprints you won’t be dissapointed by the images you get out of this older camera. Yes, newer full frame models have even better image quality and many more megapixels. The D700 is still a very fine camera in 2023. I’ve written this original review a few years ago, but everything I wrote back then still stands. If you are reading this you are probably thinking about buying a second hand NIkon D700. Introduction to my 2023 review of the Nikon D700 Zombies seem to prefer to start attacking the corners of a base anyway. I've tried doing artifical chokepoints or recessed points in my walls for placement of a kill box, but with little success compared to just surrounding everything with spikes. Trenches in general just feel like a bad idea to me due to how zombies usually behave by trying to undermine when stuck or by not acknowledging that there is a more direct route closer to your base and just whacking away at the nearest obstruction.
